Local business owner John Hix Crowell passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Cumberland Medical Center. He was 76 years old, and had been in increasingly declining health. He was born November 29, 1941 in Salisbury, NC, the only son of the late Arthur H. Crowell and Dorothy Smith Crowell. John was the founder and former owner of RoadRunner Motors, first opening the business in 1993, and move it to its current location on North Main St. in 1998, before retiring last year. Prior to this, John was a salesman and sales manager at many timeshare resorts in TN, GA, SC, and locally in Lake Tansi Village. Before moving to Crossville, John sold life insurance, and was a former supervisor at NC Finishing Co. John was an avid amateur golfer, winning tournaments both here and in his home state of NC. His packed trophy case could attest to his golfing skills. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, loved the beach, and enjoyed fishing and pulling for his beloved Vols. John was a former Little League coach, coaching baseball, football, and basketball, and was instrumental in shaping the lives of many young men. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. John is survived by his wife, Joan Goodman Crowell of Crossville, TN; son Jim (Tonya) Crowell, also of Crossville; son Johnny Jay (Lani) Crowell of Knoxville, TN; and daughter Julie (Chris) Dillon of Rickman, TN. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, who he loved more than life itself, and were his absolute joy. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws, all of whom will miss him greatly. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his only sister, Vickie Morris. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, November 3, at Bilbrey Funeral Home in Crossville, TN, with Pastor Paul Dixon officiating. Internment is scheduled to follow in Crossville City Cemetery. Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
